The Stone Roses were an English based alternative rock band in the 1980s that generally played the genre and style of English music now called Madchester. The band was originally formed in Manchester, England and comprised of four members. The members frequently changed, with new band mates coming in or leaving through the years.
Their self-titled debut album released in 1989 was one of their biggest successes. At the time of this albums release they were signed with the record label Silvertone. They later signed with Geffen records and released their second album, “Second Coming” in 1994, but broke up not long after.
While there were several musicians in and out of The Stone Roses, what is commonly accepted as the band’s most successful line up consisted of Ian Brown on vocals, John Squire on guitar, Gary Mounfield on bass, and Alan Wren on drums. There were approximately seven other musicians who all played as part of this band at one time or another and include Andy Couzens, Pete Garner, Simon Wolstencroft, Rob Hampson, Robbie Maddox, Nigel Ippinson, and Aziz Ibrahim.
One of the most memorable performances in the band took place at Alexandra Palace- a venue in London. There were only two bar staff present, and approximately 8000 fans showed up for the live performance in November of 1989.
The Madchester movement which The Stone Roses were a part of began in the late 1980s and continued through the early 1990s. It was a style of rock music that took place in Manchester, England and generally featured the styles of several different styles of rock; mainly that of dance music, alternative rock, and psychedelic music.
Throughout the recent years there have been many claims of The Stone Roses reforming. Several times the reports even made it to the news. Any and all claims of the band reuniting for a new tour have been loudly and completely denied by Ian Brown.
